Sufi-sal and the mullahs

salman ahmad: the rockstar and the mullahs..we [will] be screening the lively and thought provoking documentary The Rock Star and the Mullahs but Junoon's Salman Ahmad, the rock star of the title, will be appearing and taking part in a Q&A. Likened by the New York Times to Bono of U2, Pakistan's Salman Ahmad is religious, Western educated and deeply committed to his own culture. The Rock Star and the Mullahs documents how Ahmad's rock band Junoon - the most popular music act in South Asia - comes into conflict with his country's fundamentalists. As he meets with mullahs (religious leaders) and madrassah (Islamic school) students, wider questions emerge: Who holds the 'correct' interpretation of the religion? What is the right direction for his country in a rapidly changing world?
