Nachan mein uuday naal: Abrar ul Haq
Abrar has throughly dissapointed with his latest instalment in the majajani series- Nachhan mein uuday naal; and thats putting it mildly.
The darling of the paki-punjabi/bhangra scene shot to fame with a single song, billo, which catapulted this then geography teacher at lahore's Aitcheson college to instant stardom. And it was recognition that was well deserved, his lyrics were always fresh, often funny and sometimes even poignant.
"aanday jaanday teeshan thay kulffiyan khaawan gay"
-Billo
Lord knows what prompted him to change this sure-fire formula for sucess, mabye it was the fact that the majority of his fans are probably urdu-speaking, or merely that his engine of aritstic innovation come to a screeching halt; whatever the reason, abarar's albums have been a downward spiral.
In the title song, abrar begins with the following english/urdu lyrics:
"hello, be my darling
hey hello, be my girl
sun to lo - I always wanted a laal parandah"
If that doesnt make genuine abrar fans (and i used to consider myself one), want to pull there very hair out-i wonder what will. I could live the mediocre tunes, the synth. beats, the weird back-up vocals, but really this is too much. I know we hear this gydrid language all around us, but there is just something totally unacceptable about panjabi and dehati english together in a bhangra song.
One more artist goes the way of junoon-who must we now look to ensure that paki-pop prospers? the likes of 'channo' man- ali zafar?
*shudder*
